"The Underneath" by Kathi Appelt. Read Whole Book, Mar.23-25.
This book was so-so. It's not my favorite book ever but not my least favorite. I enjoyed it but am not in love with it. The author's writing style was interesting. It's third person omniscient but it also lets you know what trees are thinking and other inanimate objects. Anyway, it's about a abandoned cat that's having kittens who befriends an old dog. The dog belongs to a mean, old man who would use the kittens for alligator bait if he ever found them(the kittens). It's also about a tribe of Indians(Caddo) and a spirit, Grandmother Moccasin. Her daughter Night Song turned into a human and married Hawk Man and had a kid but Grandmother Moccasin really wants her daughter back in snake form. I know it sounds confusing but the author makes both story-lines blend together with a key character-the Alligator King. Grandmother Moccasin makes a deal with him and the kittens and dogs have to be careful around him.
The worst part of the book was when the mom cat died. It was really sad and pointless. I remember being so mad about it when I read the book for the 1st time(this is a reread). Anyway, I would recommend this book to most people, especially people that tolerate animals and enjoy myths and legends.
