"The Almighty Essay" by Trip Gabriel, pages 1-3 (whole article) Time read:10 minutes
Ok this is in response to a New York Times article about college essays but to me it was pretty pointless. More or less, all it says that essays are important for getting into college. Which I already knew. I'm getting the feeling Trip Gabriel does not like "the almighty essay". "What if, like most 17-year-olds, a high school senior sounds wooden or pretentious or thunderously trite when trying to express himself in the first person"(Gabriel) That,in my opinion shows the author thinks the essay should not be as important as it is. I think this might be because of his kids are having trouble with their essays because why else would he be writing this?
As I said, this article was pointless to me because my sister is a senior so I know all about the college trips, the essays, and the applications. Fortunately she's a good writer and got into Duke early, but you could be like Trip Gabriel's kids and need to take expensive workshops and everything. I know my sister got her essay looked over by people but I'm not sure if we had to pay. Hopefully not. But this article did teach me one thing. When in doubt, write about tofu. :)
Duke? Cool! Make sure you go visit her!
