Week 21-25 "Speak"

"Speak" by Laurie Halse Anderson. Read whole book, Feb. 21-23.

This book is about a freshman outcast who is practically mute for reasons you can guess pretty easily after reading a bit. It's the same reason she is an outcast. Anyway, this book is a little bit about what happened, and her past, but mostly it's just her thoughts and how she won't speak. This book also incorporates her art into this. Her art teacher sounded really good, like one of those teachers that is just a good teacher and connects with their class.
In this book, it talks a lot about how her lips are always dry and scabby. I didn't really know why and thought I had missed something in the book but I think now that it just represented her barely speaking. Instead of having a full, moist, glossed mouth, she had the opposite. This book was really sad and kind of depressing, but at the same time funny in a dark way. I feel the ending could have been elaborated because I felt it didn't quite tie in all loose ends. I'd say how it didn't tie in all the loose ends but that would spoil the book so too bad, if you want to know why the author messed up you have to read it yourself! And I do recommend reading it!

  1. Interesting idea about how the author used the symbol of lips.
What makes you think the art teacher connects with the class? What examples do you have?
